Tomorrow is the first official day of summer and in honor of this we want to share some fun activities that you can do locally this summer with friends or family!

Take in a Baseball Game

Whether its a high school team, a minor league team or you want to head to a Major League Field there are many options to take in some baseball this summer. Locally, you could see the Burlington Bees, the Cedar Rapids Kernels or the Iowa Cubs. A short days drive could get you to a Major League field, either the Kansas City Royals, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Chicago Cubs or the Chicago White Sox.

Go Fishing

Maybe sports aren’t your thing but you like the relaxation and quiet of nature. Gather up your fishing pole, your tackle box and head out to a local farm pond, lake or the river to see what you can catch! Make sure you purchase a license first and always get permission to fish on private property.

Go Camping

Southeast Iowa is known for some great campgrounds. The Iowa DNR has a lot of great campgrounds where you can camp in primitive sites with no electricity or full hookup sites with water, electricity and sewer. Many counties also have county campgrounds that you can make reservations at during the summer. OR you can always pitch a tent in the backyard.

Learn to Kayak or Paddle-board

Have you tried out some of the newest trends in water sports? Find your nearest kayak or paddle-board rental company and try it out for yourself. There are also many places that offer classes to learn how to use these!

Visit a waterpark

In the heat of the summer it is always great to find a waterpark where you can stay cool. Locally in southeast Iowa you can find some great ones at Hucks Harbor in Burlington, The Beach Ottumwa, and Honey Creek Resort has an indoor facility that can be used year round.

Go to the Fair

Almost ever county has a county fair in the summer. Find the closest one to you and spend a day at the fair! Many communities have smaller festivals with a lot of fun activities you can take advantage of during the summer months. If you want to get a BIG fair experience you should check out the Iowa State Fair for 2 full weeks of fun!

Picnic

Find a local park near you, pack a lunch, a blanket and enjoy lunch or dinner at a park.

Check out local playgrounds

There are so many cool playgrounds these days, big slides, cool climbing gear, splash pads, adult exercise machines, they have it all! Take a short drive to a neighboring town to find a new playground to explore or plan a playground tour where you can try out 2 or 3 new playgrounds in a day!

Summer Concert

Take in a summer concert in your area. From local festivals that have evening entertainment to large scale concerts that boast name band artists. Summer is the time to take in a fun outdoor concert!

Explore Nature

Get out and explore nature this summer. You might go on a photo scavenger hunt, do some geocaching, ride 4 wheelers or just plan a simple hike at a local nature center. Find some time this summer to relax and enjoy all of the great opportunities the great outdoors has in store for you!
