Self defense is an important skill for anyone to learn, but can be even more important for females working in the real estate industry. Two Mossy Oak Properties  Boley Real Estate agents took advantage of a local opportunity to brush up on their self defense skills. Kay Spieler, Broker Associate and Penny Sharp, Agent attended a session sponsored by Centerville Realties where they learned some basic skills to keep them safe if they are ever in an uncomfortable situation.

In the course of the job in real estate, there is the possibility of being confronted with the threat of physical attack on a daily basis. Unfortunately, the majority of realtors are typically armed with little to no self-defense. A recent survey conducted by the National Association of Realtors, 40% of the respondents reported that they had experienced a situation that made them fear for their personal safety or safety of their personal information while on the job. The local class was held at the Centerville High School weight room on Tuesday November 14th. There were 22 women in attendance for this event, ranging from real estate agents to women who just wanted to know how to defend themselves. Billy Brooks taught the ladies some basic moves to get them out of a situation and how to be prepared for anything they may encounter.

Penny Sharp stated that “It was awesome to see so many local real estate agents come together to learn the best ways to protect themselves if they get caught in a frightening situation. We all think it can’t happen to us, but statistics tell a very different story. At some time in our career, we are very likely to find ourselves in a position, where we would be forced to react quickly, and at the same time, keep our witts about us. We learned some basic moves that could help us out of the most common scenarios. We also had a lot of fun. Thanks to Michele for planning this great local event.”

“Awareness of your surroundings is key to your own safety no matter what you do for a living. It’s great to have an opportunity to brush up on those self defense skills from time to time,”  noted Broker Associate, Kay Spieler. Kay wants to thank Centerville realties for sponsoring this opportunity!

We commend Kay and Penny for taking the initiative to attend this course and arm themselves with tools to keep themselves safe while on the job. Prevention and preparation are key to self-defense awareness.   Self defense is not just about the physical aspect, its also about being proactive and being prepared for any situation that may arise and planning for how you will handle these situations.
