The Iowa State Fair is in full swing. Opening day of the fair was yesterday, August 10th and will run for 11 days filled with fun activities, exciting shows and engaging exhibits for the entire family!
According to their website Nothing Compares to the thrills of a super sensational ride or the thrill of dancing and singing along with your favorite bands. Maybe you prefer the thrill of a blue ribbon or the latest food adventure on-a-stick, Nothing Compares to State Fair Thrills!
Some of the highlights of the 2017 Iowa State Fair include:
Top notch grandstand entertainment. The grandstand has shows every night of the fair featuring well known artists. This year the hot ticket was Pentatonix, which has sold out, but there are still 10 other great shows you can catch at the fair. Free stage entertainment. If you don’t want to pay for tickets to to the grandstand shows you can still see some quality entertainment on the four free stages. Popular acts such as Tiffany, Brett Young, Hairball and Country Gold (Leroy VanDyke, Gary Morris, Rex Allen Jr.) will be performing on these stages. Food! Yummy Yummy Food! Every year the fair has a large variety of items on a stick or crazy fried foods which they are famous for. Did you also know that each year they introduce a variety of new items and the fair? They even hold an event just to introduce these items and sample them prior to the fair beginning! Some of the new items for this year include; Pork- Almighty, Iowa’s Big Pork Leg, Mig’s Applewood Smoked Chicken Wrap, Thanksgiving Balls and Campfire Cones just to name a few. The Butter Cow. This is a popular exhibit each year at the Iowa State Fair, a cow carved entirely out of butter! This year the cow will be joined by a butter sculpture of Laura Ingles Wilder to commemorate her 150th birthday. The sculptures can be found in the John Deere Agricultural Building during the entire 11 days of the fair. You can learn more about the sculptures and their history on the fair website here.
