Late April and early May usually have avid campers ready to head to campgrounds near and far for relaxation and time with nature. As the temperatures start to warm more activities are happening at many local parks, State parks and within our communities to encourage camping.
Did you know “Camping Kickoff” with the Iowa DNR is set for May 6th with activities happening at many State Parks across Iowa? You can check out ALL the details about events happening across Iowa on their website.
Locally, in Southeast Iowa, a few of the events happening include:
Lacey Keosauqua State Park- 9am- Bird Watching Hike (Begins at Ely Ford)- Check out the Friends of Lacey Facebook page for additional information.
Honey Creek State Park and Honey Creek Resort has a variety of activities including information on pollinator gardens, a bird basics hike, learning about nesting supplies, build a bird feeder, nature tales, and butterfly magnets. You can get the details about all of these activities here.
Red Haw State Park will host a kids fishing outing with a hot dog roast, prizes, night crawlers, and a few fishing poles to use at stone shelter from 1-3pm. They will also offer a guided tour of the new campgrounds at 6pm.
Van Buren County Conservation is ready to kick off the camping season by offering FREE camping weekends at three county parks in May. Lake Sugema campground’s free weekend is on May 5th/6th, Morris Park is May 12th/13th and Bentonsport Campground is May 19th/20th . Lake Sugema campground does accept reservations by calling: 319-293-3532. In Monroe County campers can retreat to Lake Miami/Miami Park just 5 miles East of Lovilla. They offer full hook up sites, electric and tent camping as well as cabins that can be reserved year round. While camping at Lake Miami you will also find the education center as well as 3 shelters for family gatherings or picnics that can also be reserved for a small fee.
