With the approach of the Keosauqua Chamber Golf Tournament this weekend and the hot rivalry between the two Mossy Oak Properties Boley Real Estate teams we thought it would be a great time to share a few golf tips. We don’t claim to be golf professionals but have done a little research to determine some of the best tips for beginners or avid golfers.



Take Aim

It is important to not only make sure that your feet are lined up with your target but also your knees, hips, shoulders and club head. If you try to aim off to the right or left and compensate in the swing you are more than likely going to be off target. Set up with the correct aim and have a good natural swing.

Stand Solid

Create a wide solid base with your feet, one that keeps your body stable and balanced. Your golf swing starts at the ground so you need to ensure you are stable from the start.

Get a Grip

Practice your grip even when you aren’t golfing. You should learn one of the standard grips (overlap, interlock or baseball) that feels comfortable to you and practice holding your club in this way. Take the club in the house and practice holding it each day. When aligning your hands you want to be sure that you place the fleshy pad of your right thumb directly on top of your left thumb. The ‘V’ made between your right thumb and forefinger should point to your chin.



Use the Loft

Practicing with a short, lofted club encourages better posture and cleaner ball striking. Its good to see a nice high ball flight. If you have too little loft it encourages a destructive scooping action to get the ball upwards.



Perfect Posture

Any good swing requires good posture in order to be consistent, accurate and have a powerful ball strike. You need to ensure that you are tilting at the hips when you reach your club over the ball. Follow these steps to achieve the perfect posture:

  1. Hold the club in front of your belly button with your arms and legs straight. Stand up tall with your shoulders pulled back and stick your chest out.
  2. Tilt forward making sure you tilt at the hips only. Your lower back should remain flat rather than rounded. Feel like you are pushing your rear-end backwards.
  3. As the club lowers to touch the ground behind the ball, flex your knees slightly. Do not over-bend your knees.
