This beautiful brick historical home sits on one full block in the historic district of Bentonsport, Iowa. The circa 1840's, brick Federal style home is one of the earliest Bentonsport landmarks. It was built on a section of land purchased from the U.S. Government by Herman P. Graves in November, 1838, with its deed signed by President John Tyler. It became known as the Cowles House when the property was purchased by the Cowles family including Erastus and Dr. Chester W. Cowles. The house features zoned air conditioning and central heat, however the high ceilings and large windows throughout the home keep it comfortable much of the year. The kitchen window overlooks a view of the Bentonsport Rose Garden and the Des Moines River. The property also includes a 1 bedroom guest cottage with a full bath and screened porch. An historic blacksmith shop, which is a brick structure suitable for commercial use, sits on one corner of the property. A restored 40-foot windmill tower seits on another corner.
